As creatives, we need a place to create and having a set office space to do your thing is very important – just like you have an eating area so you don’t eat on the bed or on the couch. When you have a place to work, that’s a designated area. You go there to do your job and leave to focus on other important tasks.
I’m currently working on having a set place to do all my work – blogging, photography, design. After my day job, I come back home to my bed to work on my blog, which isn’t the best for my body. I tend to get carried away and my back starts to hurt.
That’s when I realized I really needed an office space…badly. In my search for an office space, I knew I wanted a functional yet stylish area. A place I could go to work and leave when I was finished. A place with a desk, comfortable chairs and just enough accessories that make me want to work.
TIPS ON CREATING A FUNCTIONAL HOME OFFICE:

- Get the basics and tools
- Motivate yourself
- Make it pretty
1. FIND A GOOD SPOT
Whether it’s in a corner of your home, your bedroom, a closet or even a rented office space at a location away from home, it’s a good idea to find a designated area for working. When you have a set area, you know that it has a purpose – work.
2. GET THE BASICS & TOOLS
You obviously need to buy the basic home office items once you have found a designated spot for your office. You also need tools to work with for your creative projects. Photographers need editing tools and client management platforms; designers would require graphic design tools – ranging from free to paid tools; bloggers need good content management platforms, planning and scheduling tools. If you don’t already have them, consider getting some.
Once you have those, you’re one step closer to building your functional home office.

3. MOTIVATE YOURSELF
You started your blog or business for a reason. It could be to make more money, hone your passion or even keep yourself busy as a stay-at-home parent. Whatever that reason was, you need to keep a constant reminder of why you started in the first place.
The truth is, you won’t always be at the top of your game or be in the mood to create – but I’ve found that keeping things that motivate you around you can help put you back in your groove.
Consider framing quotes that apply to you or your business or putting up a vision board. Sometimes, placing photos of your loved ones around you while you work can even be great motivators.
4. MAKE IT PRETTY
We all like a good looking office space. When you create yours, bring in some pieces that reflect you. Think of how to decorate around your desk, computer and chair. Whether it’s hanging wall art, putting up a peg board for your craft/ DIY supplies or turning your bare work area into a chic space.
